Handmade Mini Journal- for a stunning Journal

Advertisements

Hey Everyone,

Hope you all are doing wonderful. I am back again with a post on Handmade Mini Journal. If you follow me from sometime (or even long), you must be knowing lately how much I am into handmade journals. You can check my hobby related details which include painting, DIY etc by clicking here. I made a mini journal couple of months back, you can check it DIY Handmade Mini and Super Mini Journal. Somehow I wasn’t happy with the overall look of the journal so used some simple steps to add and my Stunning Handmade Mini journal is ready to flaunt.

Points to Consider-

The direct link of the mini journal is already shared. Previously for cover I went ahead with plain thick paper without much of the thing. I believe may be more for color it looked dull, I don’t know there was something missing. Hence I got an idea of using thick handmade cover and highlight the edge with Golden color. I got this handmade paper as part of journaling kit from one Instagram Seller @the_ruhaniyat. The green paper looked bright and pretty at same time, used that as cover and on edge used gold color acrylic color.

Main purpose for me to make own handmade journal is to satisfy my own aesthetics and somehow this makes me feel good now. I am good to go ahead and make wonderful painting in it.

My Views-

Overall I am really happy with the effort I gave into this journal, it turned out so wonderful. Also in coming days I have plan to make some really wonderful journals using different techniques, covers, papers etc. I am already so excited.

Are you into journaling, do you like handmade items? Do let me know in comments.

Journal- Handmade with Love

Advertisements

Never ever I thought I will go so crazy for something that will be handmade. Here I bring one of my recent handmade product a Journal which I am planning to use as Junk Journal. This entire Journal is designed and made by me.

Why Handmade Journal-

In one simple line I can say, because I love them. There is something so mysterious and at same time so attracting towards any handmade items. As I am discovering more about handmade products especially related to Art and Crafts, fell totally in love with handmade journals. Best is you can choose whatever you want to.

For this particular journal my Aim was

  1. Size around A5 but a bit bigger and kind of square
  2. Colorful pages which has got texture and deckle edges
  3. Handmade papers (purchased one) they were in between A4 and A3 size I folded and hand deckle edged them
  4. Classic coptic stitch look
  5. Cover vintage, more customized

Supply List-

Handmade Paper- I got this years back (may be 5 years) from Itsy Bitsy
Hard Cover used is a box carton that was thick and sturdy
Thread- from Pradhan Embroidery and waxed them using organic Bees Wax
For cover design- Jute from Amazon, Sticker from a local store, Washi tape again from amazon, quilled rose handmade, vintage paper from Amazon

Stitching Method- I used Coptic Stitch, one of the best and easy tutorial is linked here

My Experience-

Truly speaking it did take lots of time to make this one. First folding the paper and then hand deckle edging them, literally my finger got so sore. These are thick handmade papers above 300 GSM so even stitching them was a bit of challenge with the needle I had with me. Cover design was again a bit time taking mostly from design point of view.

Problem with handmade products especially in these cases are you just dont know where to stop, after adding every bit I was struggling whether to end it here or go a bit more or keep it minimalist. May be I was very excited.

DIY Handmade Mini and Super Mini Journal

Advertisements

An year before I went crazy for Mini Sketchbooks, watercolor books, journals. Now almost after an year  I am making my own handmade journals. This DIY Handmade Mini and Super mini journal is so easy to make even a beginner can do this.

Why Mini Journals?

I love mini journals. For doodling also I prefer A5 or below. A6 and A7 sizes are my favourite. You can see n number of paintings, doodles etc on my blog which is done on Mini Journals, Sketchbooks, Watercolor books. The feeling of finishing a project in one seating is very important for me. I generally paint or draw early morning and have extreme time constraint.

Types of Mini Journals-

I have many mini journals from different brands, Instagram seller and after understanding the anatomy of it I googled how to make and to my surprise it looked fairly easy.

You can check many of my Mini Sketchbook posts by clicking here

Some of the supply link of the products I am using are:-

Ayush Paper Mini Sketchbook Collection by clicking here. They have watercolor book, grey, brown, black and white sketchbook in sizes 4*4cm and 180 to 270 gsm. Needless to say they are my most favourite.

Menorah Stationery too have wonderful collection and you can check their A7 Size product by clicking here.

I will do a separate post on my Mini Sketchbooks/ Journals/Watercolor books collection and will link every product detail there. That will make more sense.

My Own DIY Handmade Mini Watercolor Book

In last 4-5 months I have made many DIY handmade sketchbooks. You can check many of my DIY hobby related including journals by clicking here

As of now I only made sketchbooks from around 200 GSM hot pressed paper or some handmade papers (GSM may be around 220). I wanted to make a proper DIY Handmade Watercolor book which has 270 GSM or above paper. Luckily I had some loose A5 cotton watercolor paper of 270 GSM. From one sheet of A5 Paper I made 2 Watercolor Book

One is of around 3*2.5 cm (28 sheets, 56 pages) hand deckle edged another one is 1.9*1.5 cm (6 sheets, 12 pages) with normal scissor cut. I have used normal sewing thread to bind. For my initial journals I did kettle stitch and in my last two journals I tried coptic stitch and I found coptic stitch much more better. I checked on Youtube and came across this Kettle Stitch which is more like coptic stitch and its perfect for these kind of books and I believe I am going to make many journals using this technique. You can check the tutorial here

For cover I used a thick handmade paper which I already had, and thread used is crochet yarn. Going forward I will try to make fancy covering as these two have the most basic one. But I love them.

Below are the pics:-

See how mini it is

This tiny one has my heart

Love its touch and scissor cut edges

My Views-

It was a fun project but I did face lot of difficulty in both. Deckle edging a thick 270 gsm paper was a tough deal. I literally sore my fingers by deckle edging 28 sheets. But the result was worth the pain. I dont have the proper tool so I used normal needle to make hole and that was again a difficult process in this much thick paper. But all well that ends well. I am definitely going to make more they are so cost effective and you can make whatever size you want.

DIY Handmade Coptic Stitch Journal

Advertisements

How many journals are enough? Okay lets modify it especially if you are a hoarder how many handmade journal are enough? Fine there can never be one answer. So to stop the guessing game I started making my own DIY Handmade Journals and the best way I have found till now is the Coptic Stitch method. Today I am going to share the details, my views, experience on this beautiful DIY Handmade Coptic Stitch Journal

A Little Background

I always loved stationary, art and craft items. But it was 2015 when my love knew no bound. Earlier due to studies after that job I never got time to think and do much. Though I was always in doodling and some minor art work. In 2015 when I saw one of my known who was doing a proper full time job like me still making out some time to do beautiful art and craft work. I got inspired I knew this is what I always wanted to do. So I checked online if I can find anything related, that time there were very few dedicated websites, information etc in India. I came across https://itsybitsy.in/ and life has never been same.

I ordered some quilling stuff, crochet material and papers and lots of papers. But my hectic corporate life and some developments at personal front never let me explore and do much. Still I continued. Papers I purchased in 2015-16 was with me. Recently while cleaning I came across bundles of Handmade papers, normal colored papers, different types and textured papers, tissue papers, crepe papers and so many more.

Why Handmade Journal?

Because I love it, yes the reply is as simple as that. I love writing, i write everything, i write whatever is my plan for the day, for the week, for the month, my wishes, my failures my success everything. I love to draw, doodle, paint, stick, junk journaling. Also write points from the book I am reading, my feeling etc. These days with mobile and laptops its easy to do everything but the charm of hand written notes never gone. I do have a collection of sketchbooks, notebooks etc and its going on but I jumped into handmade journal almost 3-4 months before. I have posted about my first handmade sketchbook experience here

While writing this post I tried to search my other 2 DIY journals which I prepared in January and as always I missed to post about them. So very soon I will be sharing my other 2 handmade journals on the blog.

DIY Handmade Coptic Stitch Journal

Benefit of following many talented articles, benefit of watching various youtube videos, benefits of checking Pinterest? You get so many ideas and ideas and ideas…its upto you how you follow and implement them.

Journals were always my weakness and as I started making handmade ones, exploration of more types of stitch, covers started too. One fine day I came across this beautiful Coptic Stitch Method. This…This is what I was looking for from looooooong time. I knew this is what is meant for me. Without any delay I searched for youtube videos and came across this wonderful video which made my work so so so so easy. I checked so many videos but this one I found the best https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEQ0ZWOsCpY&ab_channel=Mr.OtterArtStudio

Supplies and Process-

I have shared the link in above line which I followed completely. As every journal and everyone’s style is different so I am just listing down below my supplies details

Cover– I used one torn page from my daughter’s board book. It was of no use and very thick in material hence I went ahead with it.

Cover’s Cover– I used decoupage napkin from Itsybitsy online. I got mine some 4-5 yrs back so I dont think the exact one is there. You can still check their Decoupage napkins by clicking here

Paper-  I used handmade A4 size paper which again was purchased from ItsyBitsy.
I hand deckle edged the paper y wetting the edge, again there are many videos available for the same.

Thread- While writing this post I have already made my second coptic stitch journal and I didnt used waxed thread. It does make a difference. Same thread last time I waxed it from beeswax already available in my home. You can either buy waxed thread or can do it in your home. There are lots of videos available on internet. Also I have read many people use candle wax also, though the beeswax or vegan wax (like Candelilla wax) is a better choice. With waxed thread the hold is strong.

Other Tools- Glue, Scissor, Punching tool, needle.

Finally Time for the Pictures

So here we go there are lots and lots of pictures
